Coupling of the InterDigital Policy-driven Device Client with Alcatel-Lucent lightRadio™ Wi-Fi® Solution Provides Operators with a Seamless, Transparent, and Secure Wi-Fi Handover Based on Real-time Network Conditions and Subscriber Entitlements
InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today announced the availability of its Smart Access Manager (SAM) client on the Android and Windows Phone platforms. The announcement follows the successful interoperability and demonstration with Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio™ Wi-Fi solution, offering an intelligent traffic management solution for mobile operators that optimizes access and application connectivity according to service provider control.
InterDigital's SAM is a policy-driven client that enables smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices to make intelligent traffic management decisions using Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE networks. The SAM client dynamically directs traffic flows by type of application, resulting in optimized connectivity and enhanced service provider visibility and control. Its availability on Android and Windows platforms provides device OEMs with the ability to offer seamless and secure policy-driven Wi-Fi handover as a differentiator — a key capability given the increasing use of mobile devices for data-rich applications such as streaming video.
The successful integration with Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio™ Wi-Fi solution, first demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, provides operators with an ANDSF-based and 3GPP-compliant solution that extends 3G and LTE networks to include Wi-Fi. The lightRadio™ Wi-Fi solution uses the 5780 Dynamic Services Controller (DSC) Wi-Fi Control Module to dynamically send policies to participating mobile devices helping to ensure that subscribers are receiving the best access and application experience possible. The combined capabilities allow operators and device OEMs to deliver:
- dynamic, seamless, and secure Wi-Fi handover, with network selection driven by operator and/or user preferences and network conditions
- allocation of individual applications to specific networks, based on Service Provider policy, QoS/QoE specifications, service entitlements, and network conditions
- QoE and reliability management for Wi-Fi, with dynamic adjustment of network selection & policy based on network status and utilization
"Integration of Wi-Fi and more dynamic, distributed network strategies are a necessary response to increasing mobile data demand, and a focus of development at InterDigital®. By announcing the availability of the platform for integration with Android and Windows Mobile, we're providing device OEMs with a compelling differentiator, and by interoperating SAM with Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio Wi-Fi solution, operators now have a compelling end-to-end solution for operators that can address data demands," said
